Samsung Launches the Galaxy Tab – An Android Alternative to the iPad

The first serious competitor for the iPad has been launched by global electronics giant, Samsung.

Just as Android phones have grown from a small handful of mediocre attempts to a relentless onlaught of cool new gadgets that are quickly displacing iPhone’s dominance, Android tablets are now queuing up to overtake the emerging tablet market. Currently standing at the front of that queue is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, the first really compelling Android tablet (in fact, it’s downright iPad-esque).

Cohesion is supporting both the iPad and Android devices like the Galaxy Tab with our mobile applications for SAP. AT&T and Verizon will sell the Galaxy Tab later in 2010.

SAP Co-CEO Bill McDermott says ‘The device changes everything’

A nice quote from Bill McDermott today during his appearance at the DEMO conference in Santa Clara, CA.

“Public clouds are fine, private clouds are fine, on-premise is fine,” McDermott said. “But what I really believe is that the device changes everything.”

In other words, he said that when you are able to access your business applications and data on new devices like the iPad, you don’t care about where the data is stored. It’s the device that matters, not the infrastructure. That’s why SAP acquired Sybase to help build its mobile strategy. The two companies share a vision of “real-time, in-memory computing,” McDermott said.

We agree with Bill’s sentiment. Users don’t care about the back-room details of their system. They just want an easy interface and access to their system wherever it’s needed. That’s why Cohesion is selling mobile front-ends for SAP ERP.

… 120 million iOS devices have been shipped since the iPhone’s debut back in 2007. 230,000 is the next number of significance — that’s the tally of daily iOS activations. SAP Business ByDesign – ERP using the SaaS Model

SAP has published a YouTube advertisement for their new Software-as-a-Service product, Business ByDesign.

There are some technical details about the product in the interview below with Peter Zencke from SAP. There is a minimum of one blade server per customer.

DF: There is a lot of discussion around multi-tenant versus single-tenant approaches to delivering applications. What is the delivery architecture behind Business ByDesign?

PZ: Where we came from there was always one database, then client/server and multiple servers and front ends. mySAP’s front end has become quite complex. We asked can we run an end-to-end stack, application, network, database, messaging and backend integration on one blade.

Apple: 80% of the Fortune 100 deploying or piloting iPhone

Apple Computer CFO, Tim Cook, discussed the deployment of iPhone and iPad devices at Fortune 100 companies. The company shipped 8.4 million iPhones and 3.27 million iPads in the quarter. There are now more than 100 million devices shipped with the Apple touch operating system, IOS.

The Fortune 100 is the home of the world’s largest SAP installations. Inevitably, these companies will be accessing their SAP data via Apple IOS devices. Cohesion has developed an easy mobile interface to access SAP data from iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

The iPad, very surprisingly in the first quarter, during the first 90 days we already have 50% of the Fortune 500 that are deploying or testing the iPad. This is incredible. That is the Fortune 100, excuse me.

If you look at the iPhone, we’re now up to more than 80% of the Fortune 100 that are deploying or piloting the iPhone, and we also see very good momentum in the Fortune 500. In fact, over 60% of the Fortune 500 are deploying or piloting iPhone. This is also transcending into education institution, and we see around 400 higher education institutions, which have included the iPhone for faculty, staff and students.
