Lest we forget SAP…

This Computerworld article puts some hot technologies in perspective. SAP is still the leading product for global business.

This client, a worldwide manufacturer, is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in SAP software for its worldwide supply chain, financial management and reporting, inventory and order management, etc.

For better or worse, SAP is the firm’s next worldwide IT foundation. Not Web 2.0/cloud/agile/social/[insert hot new tech here]; plain old SAP. That means ABAP, with a tip of the hat to Java and Microsoft. Why? SAP’s apps and platforms are proven in the kind of large-scale worldwide business support this firm requires. The firm can find people who know how to implement and run big SAP installations. The implementation and operational problems are pretty well known. None of these things can be said about the hot new technologies

Cohesion is a reseller of SAP to small and medium enterprises. The monthly cost of SAP is comparable to many SaaS products, but the functionality and flexibility is much greater.

Building Real-Time Systems to Achieve the Best Returns – XOJET

Launched in 2006 with its headquarters in California (USA), XOJET created an entirely new model for private aviation. Growing from one Cessna Citation corporate jet, today XOJET commands the newest fleet in the skies, with more than 100 aircraft in service or on order. The company flies all over the world, serving five continents and more than 25,000 airports. Members such as major corporations, business leaders, entertainers, sports professionals, and philanthropists do not need to buy a jet; they can lease a share from XOJET or purchase hours.

XOJET’s operational model is so efficient that they can offer better service at a better value. As a result, they offer one of the best on-time performance records in the business and pricing that averages 10-25 percent lower than that of other competitors.

In less than three years, XOJET has become one of the fastest-growing private aviation companies in history, counting among its clients well known entertainers, business executives and investors. Backed by world-renowned aviation investor Texas Pacific Group, XOJET raised $3 billion to fund a highly advanced operational infrastructure, sophisticated fleet, and global expansion.

Because XOJET started from scratch and attracted substantial funding, the company has redefined a better total private jet experience. How? By choosing to make major investments in safety and service, even when those efforts have been costly or difficult.
Rather than outsource care of the fleet of jets, the company built an integrated safety and operational infrastructure in-house as a core competency. Consequently, XOJET sets and controls safety standards that are much more stringent than those required by the FAA and most other operators.

I had the opportunity to discuss with Paul Touw, Executive Chairman of XOJET, the core of his innovative, smarter approach. “In our business we are growing about “2X’ every year so we need to be able to invest in systems well before we actually need them. It is important to us to raise capital and cash and develop the systems 18 months before we need them. Nowadays when you have technology to get real-time metrics on how your business is performing, you can laser target and pinpoint how to optimize your business – gauge net profitability, for example. You now have a new tool that you can leverage for greater effectiveness. Therefore, I can optimize a new business much faster and adapt in a new market much quicker than the old rule of thumb, these systems provide real-time data from our operations on a daily basis. SAP forms the central core to our maintenance systems, flight operations systems, crew resource systems, and safety systems, which gives me a tool from which we can derive immediate information: how the business is performing, optimizing flights to different locations, and the costs of different elements of our business. Traditionally you would get this data only every quarter and as a result, couldn’t immediately tweak the feedback in order to optimize the business. Now, having these new SAP systems, I find it is absolutely a cornerstone to what we are doing a XOJET.’
